Technology Advances, or steps backwards?

I just got a new bank card. It has an embedded chip in it. This chip stores information, and then gives it out when the card is read by a machine. The problem appears to be that these cards are designed to make the life of the banks and financial institutions easier, and not so much to protect the consumer. When we read the hype about these cards, we get the impression that they are more secure than the old magnetic strip type of card, but this is not actually so. They emit a signal, and this can be detected and sometime read while the card is not meant to be in use. The answer to this is the rfid blocking wallet that effectively shields the radio type signals, and makes it so that the information on the card is only able to be read when the card is intended to be used.
